Behind the lens

Ulrich Knoblauch is a Cape Town based photographer. We’d say he has a job most men would be jealous of. Why? Read and see.

In recent years every second Smartphone owner has turned into a photographer. You, on the other hand, are still very much a man who likes to get behind the lens of a big ol’ camera. Tell us about your job?

My job allows me to live a pretty perfect life. I get to be creative whilst doing what I love, work only for who I want to, be constantly surrounded by amazingly talented individuals and still earn a living. I consider myself blessed.

So let’s get to the point. You take nudes of very pretty girls. How and when did this start?

A lot of my nudes are shot on Polaroid as part of a book I started working on a couple of years ago. We were shooting an editorial for an international magazine one day and shot a bunch of Polaroid’s in between just for fun. They turned out great and the rest, as they say, is history.

The girls in these pictures are close, likeminded friends so it allows us to express ourselves and have a laugh doing so.

You went to the New York Fashion Week this year. Was it all that and more?

It was! I ended up backstage at a couple of the the big shows like Marc Jacobs. The energy is addictive.

Tell us about one highlight in your career.

I’d have to say that New York fashion week is right up there.

Can you share an embarrassing moment with us

When I was an assistant I once forgot the photographer’s camera at the hotel they were staying at. And of course as Murphy would have it, we shot on location miles away that day and capturing the sunrise was important. All I can say is that he missed the sunrise bit…
