Whether you like rugby or not, a damn good try is a damn good try. Everyone can appreciate Bryan Habana chasing his own chip kick to go down in toe corner, or Francois Hougaard sidestepping his opponent to make the guy look like he is lost in the underwear isle in Woolworths while Hougi dives over for a brilliant try.
But then there are the forward tries that are more often than not, a bit on the boring side. Sure, we all love it when The Beast (Beeeeeaaaaaast) crosses the line after a successful ruck and maul sequence, but let’s face it: forwards hardly ever entertain on the tryline.
On Saturday however we were treated to one of those rare gems when Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss intercepted a wayward Scottish pass to run a good 25 metres to plant the ball underneath the poles.
Every frontrower’s dream!
We are proud of the Free State boytjie’s superb run, and his try reminded us of another Springbok frontrower’s try on tour… Probably the best try ever by a front ranker.. Enter Richard Bands!
Mr Bands gets a pop pass from Joost just inside the Springbok half during this match in New Zealand, then runs like a wing to the corner, in the process shoving Carlos Spencer away with a “The Buss Is Full” hand-off and scoring in the corner.
You gotta love it when the big boys get in on the action!
